Thank you so much for writing this. It was just what I needed right now. I especially needed to be reminded that God knew how things would turn out. It amazes me how easily it is to slip into the flesh and think that "I" could have anything to do with the way things turn out. Thanks!

Thank you so much for your podcast. I am a female pastor and my husband helps me when he can. He is my tech guy, builder, painter, and is will to be slimed, pied, and is such a blessing to me and the ministry. I wish he could quit his job and help me all the time.
I also wanted to say thank you for sharing that some days you only get a few phone calls finished. I always have an ongoing list of things to do but some of them take weeks to finish. I thought I was just slow. I also have to report to my pastor weekly but sometimes he has an unrealistic expectation of how quickly things can be accomplished.
It is so nice to you wife can help with some of the administration task that it takes to run a ministry. These are the task that take up most of my time and are draining for me. I know they need to be done but it frustrates me when I spend most of my time on those tasks and then there is not enough time to be as creative in the planning.
I also love the spiral wishing well and will be ordering on for our ministry. Again thank you for taking time to share with others. You guys are a blessing to me.

I think finding the right parents are key - I picked two sets of parents (from the 15 or so I have available) and told them that I want our kids to be like them, and that I want their input in the program, as parents. They were families with higher than usual interest in their children's spiritual development - I just gave them a wider sphere of influence and material to reinforce what they were already doing.
I've had a lot of people talk about the "requiring parents to do time in Kid's Church" - I think this is, in LOST terms, the beginning of the end. Then it becomes about wrangling kids in order to provide adults with a childfree church experience, instead of a ministry to people within a family who are all on the same path, following Jesus.

I totally agree. Some of my best volunteers have been parents. But they were parents that God sent me... not ones who were required or forced. For me it's not enough to just fill a position with a body. I want their heart there too! God will provide the rest! And the right people are worth waiting for!

I have had people tell me that the solution to all our staffing problems is to "require parents" to volunteer. I don't see that as the solution. Although I urge all parents to volunteer, I'm sure that everyone has parents that they DO NOT want involved in their ministry. I've also had to let go of disgruntled parent volunteers who have felt pressured into helping and they have made sure that I know they are NOT happy to be there!

I think the main question to ask is: is it ministry or is it babysitting?? At our church we value ministry. And I know that the only true supplier of workers is God. Parents are a great source to search for ministers, but not all of them are going to be a good fit. Take what you can get, and then allow God to provide the rest! Being in Children's ministry has been a journey of faith...trusting God to provide for each service. We have never had to close the nursery....because God is faithful!

Hi Pastor, I don't know you but my heart is in the same place. I'm just a volunteer children's church coordinater. I've been feeling for a while that God has a bigger plan with this ministry and I realized that I'm not that person as a volunteer. I'm a professional therapist and I won't be able to do this ministry full time. My meeting with my pastors is tommorrow and I pray and know that God has a way of working all this out. thanks for the post and good luck with the new position. (SA)

James, that was an awesome story! Loved it! I read a story each year at our Christmas Eve service. Will you get this in print? or could I pay for a copy of it? Would love to have it to read next year to my kids/families. Let me know.
Thanks ...
P.S. The discipline notes are great! Will be using and implementing some of the stuff in our services soon.

That's cute!! Love it! You should put it up on worshiphousekids.com !

Not sure where this research came from, but last weekend I was visiting a church and the preacher said during the sermon that recently some Bible scholars have speculated that it probably wasn't an actual "Inn" that Mary and Joseph stayed at, but more likely a relative's house. Interesting? The Nativity story keeps changing!! First I learned that there were probably really more than 3 wise men, that they probably didn't come for several years after Jesus' birth, and now it wasn't really an Inn!

I think that applies to any job situation. About six months ago I moved from Billings, MT to Helena, MT, from one framing crew to a new construction company. I expected it to be similar or the same to what I had in Billings, however, it was opposite. Things I suggested that I thought would increase productivity got shut down. I am now the Kids Director at Narrate Church 3/4 time and am done with construction.

That is excellent advice! I've adopted the following, "I'll say nothing for the first year." Even a good idea can make you look like a moron if it's been tried or you don't understand all of the in's and out's of the church's culture. Good stuff!

My first few months on the job (3 years ago), I just sat quietly and more quietly. I did my work, but I only talked in group meetings with peers when I was called on. I lived the motto, "Better to say nothing and be thought a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt."

After a few months, the Lord started opening up doors of opportunity to be a part of things and the ball's been rolling ever since. and I've seen way to many newbies come in with their blowtorches and ruin any chance of having influence...

I did something similar when I started 2 years ago except I went from general to more specific. Everything was refered to as "Children's Ministry." This included what happened on Sunday morning and registered childcare for small groups. I branded everything under Fellowship Kids which separated what we do on Sunday morning from registered childcare.

I met myself in your post -- the bit about the untrained, volunteer with no budget, that is. My Church of 200+ families and 20 or so kids had a Children's Ministry budget of $300 per year, which had to cover all classroom materials, all fellowship programs, such as the annual Sunday School Christmas party, and anything else, such as curriculum. I paid for lesson activity materials out of my own pocket, as there wasn't really anything left over for 'fancy.' I certainly didn't need advice in 'leadership, time-management or budgeting."

I designed my website specifically to provide the help I most wanted to find online. A place for us to do exactly as you describe, to share our experience -- share what we've learned, share what's worked -- and what hasn't worked -- practical things like planning Christmas programs, and icebreaker games, etc. It's been slow going. I build as I can, but it's growing. Articles like yours reinforce what I knew from the start, that it's something worth doing. Thank you for saying it better than I could myself.

Ohhh leaving a ministry is so different from almost any other job!! I totally feel for you. We all know that a good children's ministry is not built around YOU (the children's pastor), but the truth is, when you leave, a LOT OF THINGS have the potential to change. And when things are good, that makes it so hard for the children's pastor to leave. It also makes it hard for the church to see the children's pastor leave. If you have almost any other job in the workforce, you can quit and get a new job and not a lot will change at either place of employment. But as a children's pastor, you're tied to the church, the people, the building, the relationships in ways that are so personal! This might not always be the case, but when a new children's pastor comes in, they could change the appearance of the building/paint colors/theme, the name and logo of the children's ministry, the way the volunteers are recruited/trained, the curriculum, the focus of the ministry, just to name a few! If you've done things right and raised up a healthy and strong team of leaders and structure for the ministry, sometimes there won't be much change during a transition. Change isn't always a bad thing. And it isn't always good either! But it can sure be difficult. I know from experience! Hope everything goes smoothly with your transition!!

Ohhh leaving a ministry is so different from almost any other job!! I totally feel for you. We all know that a good children’s ministry is not built around YOU (the children’s pastor), but the truth is, when you leave, a LOT OF THINGS have the potential to change. And when things are good, that makes it so hard for the children’s pastor to leave. It also makes it hard for the church to see the children’s pastor leave. If you have almost any other job in the workforce, you can quit and get a new job and not a lot will change at either place of employment.
I am huge not only on names, but also on the logo that goes with it. I am far from a professional designer but I am a dabbler of sorts when it comes to custom logos for ministries and special events. I feel that you could the greatest name out there, but a sorry logo means no one will notice.

Our Children's Ministry is called "Victoryville Children's Ministries" (based off Victorious Life Church)
Our Sunday Morning services are called: Treasure Seekers (4-5) & The V (6-11) Treasure Seekers is island & treasure themed, and The V is more a anything kinda theme. It can change month to month or week to week. I will title my lesson layout with a new theme. Like right now we have a theme called "Outkast, stand out and be different" and it is a deserted island theme with a crazy islander and all.
Our Wednesday Night program is called Dynamic Kids. Not so much themed out, but just a statement as to who we believe these kids are in Christ.

Thanks for the post!

Last night we had another prayer request to pray for someone's grandma who'd been dead for 5 years... made me think of this blog post and laugh. Sorry kids.

Have you ever had a preschooler accidentally pray TO the dead grandparent?! aaahhh.

Its so funny.... We asked our 4th and 5th graders what the rules at church should be and we were surprised to find them giving us answers and rules that frankly some of them were the key people already breaking these rules in our services: no talking, being respectful, having a good attitude..... it was very ironic!

thanks for posting this, I was a grumpy worker today. Its nice to be reminded that I am not alone.

Oops, I didn't meant to hit enter. I am truly enjoying the podcasts and website and am forever hooked. The insight is great and helps tremendously when you feel like you're alone when it comes to dealing with some of these children's ministry issues.

One of your twitter friends mentioned that they struggle with serving as children's pastor and volunteering. I can see where that is difficult. In my setting, we are a church plant that started 3 years ago and is growing. Sometimes if feels like there's no one to get the work done. I pray that this twitter friend will step out and delegate. It is SO hard, but it is worth it. You get to see a volunteer grow in their leadership gifts and see someone else at work in the children's lives. We are blessed by these struggles.

I am currently the Assistant to the Pastor and the Children's Minister at our church plant. My struggle...balance and letting go of pride. I serve in both roles under the title of Pastor's Assistant. Sometimes I find it confuses people and I just plain deal with the struggle of not having a title that reflects what I do. (Pride) I love what I do and am so thrilled to have the opportunity to serve in such a multi-faceted way.
